In 1985 as a full-time professor at Scottsdale Community College Steve created-and for ten years-taught the first Laughter, Humor, and Play Class and also the first Friendship Class in the nation for college credit.

As a Professor of Laughter, Humor and Play Steve developed innovative ideas and teaching tools on how to use humor to break up routine, get people’s attention, and then educate and empower people to change and grow personally and professionally. In 1996 as a result of his extensive research and teaching experience Steve was honored with the title of “Humor Expert in Residence” for the Maricopa Community College District. The ten colleges are located throughout the greater Phoenix area and comprise the largest Community College District in the nation with over 250,000 students.

In November of 2003, Dr. Arthur W. DeCabooter, President of Scottsdale Community College honored Steve with the “Faculty Emeritus” distinction for his professionalism and outstanding contributions to the college. Dr. Rufus Glasper, District Chancellor recognized Mr. Saffron’s exemplary legacy with the following statement: On behalf of the Governing Board and the entire District, I wish to congratulate and honor you for your dedication and accomplishments in teaching and learning during your long and distinguished career as faculty member with the Maricopa Community Colleges.

Steve is currently contracted to do 75 speaking engagements annually for faculty, staff and students throughout the Maricopa District. His topics address positive attitude, career development, healthful living, and how to use humor to lighten up, learn, and reduce stress. His most popular topic within the District faculty is entitled: The Art of Leadership-Take it Higher with Humor.
